Coalition Spaces
Coalition work has been part of GWC’s work and strategy since our inception. Garment worker struggles are intersectional to so many other fights and campaigns — city, county, State, nationally, and transnationally.
Below are the coalition spaces GWC is currently most active in.
Safety Net 4 All
The Safety Net for All Coalition is composed of over 120 organizations throughout California united by the fight for an inclusive safety net for all workers. The coalition continues to advocate for unemployment benefits for immigrant workers who are currently excluded from unemployment insurance. This would provide temporary wage replacement for undocumented workers who cannot work.
Unemployment insurance has helped millions of Californians weather the biggest challenges facing our state, from climate emergencies, to natural disasters, to housing inaccessibility, yet continues to exclude thousands on the basis of their immigration status. SN4A is fighting to include excluded workers to strengthen families, communities and the California economy.
Sanctuary LA
Throughout 2024, GWC was active in the coalition that passed the long overdue LA City Sanctuary Ordinance!
We’re still very active in this work — alongside coalition partners such as NDLON, Public Counsel, California Immigrant Policy Center, South Asian Network, Esperanza Community Housing, CAIR, and more — helping to implement the recently approved LA city ordinance and help fight for sanctuary protections throughout various municipalities in the region.
