WORK FOR THE CENTER
VOLUNTEER AT THE CENTER
Fair Trade Store/ Tabling
Interested in promoting fair trade shopping? Help us with our fair trade fundraisers - we sell fair trade items around Los Angeles county at conferences and events. We need help with people who want to table, do inventory, shop for the latest fair trade gifts and who may have ideas for our fair trade store business plan development. Join our fair trade store committee to get involved.
Saturday Chef/Cooks Wanted!
Interested in helping us provide a basic necessity for workers? We need cooks to help prepare lunch once a month for our Saturday activities. (Cooks rotate each week) Food is prepared for 50- 80 people depending on the activities. We have some recipes but are open to new food experiences and energy! We strive to provide healthy, nutritious organic and local food when possible. Anyone with local food contacts would be greatly appreciated.
Build our Youth and Worker Library
Our youth and adult library has collected over a hundred books. Our kids books are spilling off the shelves. Our teen section needs some work adding educational and interesting topics for pre-teens and teens (in English and Spanish). We also need low literacy books for adults in spanish, which may take some research and fundraising to purchase. We also need help sorting through all the titles and labeling them to help make it easier for our workers and their children to come, find topics of interest and check out books. Come help us sort through interesting titles, categorize them by topic and create a worker-friendly check out system. Spanish literacy helpful as some books are only in Spanish.
Translation
We have dozens and dozens of great workshops that need to be translated. Some are only in Spanish and others are in English. You do not need to do the translation at the office - you could take them home and work on them and then bring them back. We need translators to help make our workshops curriculum complete!
Video/ Book Dubbing and Interpretation
We have dozens of great movies and books that we want to share with workers. Help us make them more accessible with our movie dubbing project. For workers that can't read or speak English, dubbing is one way to share information. We have short documentary films that need to be dubbed. We also have articles and short essays that we want to translate onto tapes. Our worker radio project could incorporate the readings into their music CD's that get passed out to workers. We need people with a little tech experience to do the voice-overs and record the audio sessions.
Media/ Communications volunteers
Interested in working with the media? Help us to create our media info packet. We often get requests from reporters and researchers wondering about the garment industry and issues that workers face. Volunteers will sort through old photos, documents and campaign materials and help to create an info kit. If you have some experience with messaging or designing reports and outreach materials, this may be the job for you!
Computer and Tech support
Have an inner computer nerd in you that is just busting to come out? Come on in and help us with tech support. Every now and then we need to update our computers, work on our computer lab and do general support of our computer needs. Contact Stephen for more info at smiller@garmentworkercenter.org.
Childcare
At the Garment Worker Center, we try to be much more than just a service organization. So we strive to make this a place where workers feel comfortable bringing their children with them when they come to the GWC for activities on Saturday afternoons. In order to do this, we provide child care for kids ranging in age from about 1 to about 14 years of age. We welcome volunteers who would like to share in the joy of caring for these young people. Many of these children speak only Spanish, but all are eager to play, create, and share with everyone, regardless of their language abilities.
We are looking for energetic political conscious volunteers who want to help with child care development.

Database Entry
We have records from hundreds of garment workers' wage claim cases, and we need help entering that information into a database. Familiarity with Microsoft Access is a plus, but most important is a willingness to help and ability to commit some time to this very important project.
